How to Get Your Kids Outside and Connect with Nature
We now live in a time where most 12-year-olds spend more time staring at a screen than they do outside. While devices have their benefits, there’s no way to tell for sure what impact they will have on our children in the future. A growing body of research is suggesting that what happens to children when they spend time in nature is a vital part of development, and something many kids are missing out on.
Children have never lost their love for the natural world, they have simply been distracted from it. The Kaiser Family Foundation recently released a report that found that the average eight-to-eighteen-year-old in America spends more than 53 hours a week using entertainment media. This can be put down to a variety of factors, from ‘stranger danger’ to more pressured and scheduled spare time, but what can we do about kids’ disconnect with nature?
Here are some tips to get your children out in nature.
The best part about a camping trip is that there’s no WiFi. Your kids may hate you at first, but they’ll soon embrace being away from their tv, computer or games console and enjoy being outside. You can go on long nature walks and cook dinner outside. Campsites are very safe places to let your kids go off and play without adult supervision. Camping is also a fairly affordable holiday and can often be done over a long weekend. If you don’t have any gear yourself, why not ask a friend to borrow a tent. You don’t even have to go far as camping in your back garden is just as exciting.
There are national parks dotted all over the UK, so you’re never too far from an area of outstanding natural beauty. Plan some hikes with friends or go wild camping, the opportunities are endless. Your kids will be able to witness mountains, lakes, beaches and miles of beautiful walking paths. Not only will it give them a great sense of how stunning our country is, but it will likely make them want to enjoy even more national parks.
A picnic is something cheap and cheerful and you can do it almost every weekend over the summer. Whether you walk to your local park, up a mountain or just set up in your back garden, your kids will have a blast. Pack them their favourite finger foods and invite some friends and you’ll have the kids playing outside for hours.
