How to Raise Your Toddler to be Bilingual
Whether you and your partner speak different languages or you want your child to be able to speak more than one, raising your child bilingual is a great thing to do. It will open doors for them further down the line and also allow them to speak to family members or friends in a second language. It can be challenging, but understanding how children learn languages will help you better approach their development.
Here are our top tips for raising a bilingual child.
The best time frame to teach your child languages is between birth and three years old. This doesn’t mean you can’t teach older children languages, just that they will pick up the most within the first three years of their life. It’s best to start speaking different languages to your child before the age of seven.
Just because your child doesn’t yet speak or understand what you are saying, doesn’t mean they aren’t listening. The only way they will start to pick up the second language is by hearing it, so try and speak in both languages with them as much as possible. It’s also important for them to hear conversations in the second language so that they can hear how it is naturally spoken.
There are some people who may claim that raising a child in two languages will confuse them and they won’t be able to understand what is being said or how to speak it themselves. Some people also claim that it can affect development in other areas. These are simply myths and haven’t been proven by studies.
It is very common for a child who is being raised with two languages to regularly combine the two. This doesn’t mean they aren’t making great progress. Over time they will be able to separate the two in their head, but for now, it’s great that they are able to say lots of different words in two languages.
You don’t have to just rely on your children to learn a language through you. You can utilise the thousands of different resources available online and through media. Your children can learn throughout the whole day if you give them the chance. They’ll be soaking up everything they listen to and read so make the most of this. You can read them bedtime stories in both languages or let them watch movies in both languages.
